Vivian's English teacher gave this assignment last week: Finish a paragraph that begins: "As Carl Williams backed farther into the shadows,"

Vivian wrote: As Carl Williams backed farther into the shadows, he heard all his nightmares swirling through the mist of his mind. He could think straight, couldn’t see straight, his breathing was fast and uneven. Then the thing that was always chasing him came out from where it was lurking in the recesses of his mind. The thing that had corrupted him for so many days. The thing that had brought his worst nightmares to life. Then he blacked out. The next thing he knew he woke up in his bed with his friends peering over him. “Dude you know a birthday party sucks when the birthday boy blacks out. That was not cool.” said Drake. He knew Drake was joking but the words still stung. “How long was I blacked out?” he asked. His girlfriend Layla said, “About four hours.” He thought, four hours isn't as bad as last time. Then he got up and immediately sat back down. “OW” he yelled. “We think you got a concussion. Not only did you hit cement with your head when you fell, but you also threw yourself through a wall.” Layla said, “Why did you do that anyway?”
